I’m Moorea, The Sleep Witch

I’ve worked with tiny humans for over 25 years, and as a sleep professional and lactation educator & counselor for over a decade. In that time I have helped over a thousand families toward more restful sleep.

I had my own wakeful baby-  the inspiration for my life’s work. My kiddo seemed to need less sleep than any other baby I knew and woke every hour for many months. This baby would stare at me for hours in the middle of the night and I’d sometimes half-hallucinate: Your eyes are very large and look weird in the dark. Why don’t you seem to need sleep? Maybe you’re actually an alien.

I re-read all the books I had used as a postpartum doula and night nanny, and the only method that sat right with my education and values actually seemed to make things worse!

Waiting-it-out was making me delirious with sleep deprivation.  I experienced a short period of postpartum psychosis when night-waking was at its worst (I knew to get a therapist’s help and I did!). My therapist was clear that I owed it to myself to figure something out. But I still couldn’t bear to let my baby cry in a room alone (even with ‘check-ins’).

One day I found myself with a a overly-caffeinated beverage in one hand and an adorable child I resented in the other. We were not cute. I felt like had lost all sense of personal agency, creativity and personal power that I’d work so hard to cultivate in my life pre-parenting.

So I took everything I knew about infant and toddler development (I had a degree in early childhood education and was a preschool teacher and director), lactation training and human cultural anthropology and dove deep into the research on infant sleep biology (why wasn’t this in the sleep books?!). I created a method that would work effectively for all families: and especially co-sleeping and breastfeeding / body feeding families.

It was an experiment that turned out to be a miracle for my mental health and then a miracle for my friends’ families. I started teaching little classes that grew, and grew. And then was asked to teach other family professionals this perspective on sleep and I’ve been teaching family professionals for over 8 years. I launched online sleep courses for parents as well. For 8 years I called it Sleep Savvy- and now I call it Sleep Counseling. And after multiple clients called me the Sleep Witch, I adopted that name for myself!

know that parents can get their own needs met and still parent gently and attentively. We can be attentive to our children and meet their needs and also model self care and boundaries.

Any good witch will tell you that deciding on a goal, creating a clear plan and following through with consistency are often-overlooked as magical practices. They are! But there’s also nothing more magical than being truly listened to and heard before someone gives you advice. That’s why I recently rebranded to call this perspective in sleep support SLEEP COUNSELING. Creating wellness, peace and ease takes trust, commitment and dedication. There is no potion. The magic is in you.  I’m just here to guide you with science and my experienced wisdom.

You can expect to feel good about this process and you can expect it to go more smoothly than you imagined; but you must also expect to put in some work to support your baby!

There’s no better feeling than learning to hold boundaries while your baby learns to sleep with less help from you. Sleep Counseling is about empowerment!

Im Finally Sleeping Again.

Thank you very much for this detailed plan. Our little girl is happily sleeping and without Cry-it-Out!  I felt like a new person b/c I hadn’t had that much sleep in a row in over a year.  I even started having dreams again! Thanks so much for your help. I honestly feel like a different person!

Fixed Our Days for Better Nights.

Thank you for helping us realize our sleep challenges were really gentle discipline challenges and helping us have a clear plan for dealing with all of the fighting of every boundary that Z was doing. It never occurred to me the fixing daytime challenges would help our sleep but it has tremendously and I now have such great communication with my tiny person.

Potty as Bonding Time.

Her potty learning has actually been a great bonding time for us, especially as she becomes increasingly mobile. Everyone at her ‘baby college’ class always asks how she got so great at pottying so soon, and while a lot of it is her, I really credit and thank you.
